old dog shallow breathing
What does normal breathing in a dog look like?

I have a 2 and a half year old Bichon, had her since she was 6 months old. She always looks like her breathing is quick and kinda shallow. She doesn’t have heart worm, and is quite active. She has always seemed to breathe like this. Is this a normal breathing pattern for a small dog? P.S. I also freaked before I realized that dogs have irreguler heart beats, kinda hypersensitive when it comes to my dog! :)

Hi. A two and a half year old Bichon should not constantly breathe fast and shallow. However, if the dog is very active and “hyper” that will affect her breathing. Small dogs sometimes do breathe faster than larger dogs, but it should slow down when they are at rest. Bottom line, if your vet doesn’t think it is a problem and she is otherwise healthy and happy, I wouldn’t be too concerned. She is still a “puppy”, and will no doubt slow down as she gets older.
